Job Description: The candidate is responsible for the non-destructive analysis (NDA) of uranium and other radioactive isotopes in various Y-12 processing facilities using portable field instrumentation such as HPGe, Sodium Iodide (NaI), and Lanthanum Bromide (LaBr3) detectors. Responsible for taking holdup measurements of process equipment by gamma-ray spectroscopy using the Generalized Geometry Holdup (GGH) method. Develops, administers, and maintains NDA programs, systems, and procedures, including a variety of technical reports. Provides quantitative estimates of equipment holdup, fissile material accumulations, and uranium and other radioisotope content in equipment for decommissioning, disposition, and transfer. Provides quantitative estimates of equipment holdup for inventory of highly enriched uranium as required by NMC&A; characterizes and quantifies contaminated waste products for disposition; provides confirmation measurements for shipment and receipt of nuclear materials for multiple customers. Provides quantitative estimates of fissile material accumulations in large geometry equipment as required by Nuclear Criticality Safety. Provides quantitative estimates of uranium and other radioisotope content in equipment, discards, and waste for decommissioning, disposition, and transfer. Generates and maintains a variety of technical reports for NCS and NMC&A, and Waste Management customer(s). Develops and implements specific measurement and equipment improvements as well as programmatic improvements. Job Requirements: Knowledge of nuclear and radiation principles and theory Experience with gamma-spectroscopy measurement instrumentation, NDA measurement software, and data processing Good organizational and analytical skills, problem solving skills, and ability to learn and develop innovative ways to non-destructively measure uranium holdup Ability to provide frequent communication and interactions with variety of customers, schedule, and manage measurement campaigns Typical experience could range from two to fifteen plus years; no experience is required for entry level positions Qualification & Experience: Bachelor's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a Master's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a PhD in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
