Job Description:

As the Human Resources Intern, your primary duties will be to assist in and complete a wide variety of administrative, technical, and research assignments in support of the Human Resources Agency. The Human Resources Intern performs entry level analytical work under the mentorship of the Human Resources Analysts, Risk Management Coordinator, Senior Human Resources Analysts, Assistant Human Resources Director,and the Executive Director of Human Resources and may assist in one or more areas – Benefits & Leave Administration, HR Administration & Labor Relations, Employee Relations and Training & Development, Risk Management/Safety or Staffing Services – based on the needs of our Agency. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to learn about and/or experience all functions performed by our Human Resources team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs research, conducts surveys, and completes analysis regarding HR policies, procedures, and services.
  • Performs research and assists with classification and compensation surveys as needed.
  • Prepares a variety of HR files for storage.
  • Assists staffwith filing and mail distribution.
  • Assists with recruitment activities, including testing, oral board coordination, and preparing job bulletins,letters, and eligibility lists; screens employment applications for conformance with minimum qualifications.
  • Develops and recommends procedural documentation and reference materials.
  • Assists staff with phones and responds to inquiries from the public.
  • Performs research and preliminary administrative analysis.
  • Enters employee personal information and other related data into the City’s HCM system or another database.
  • Assists job applicants by answering basic questions about assigned area of HR.
  • Assists withbuilding security policiesby creating and recording ID badges.
  • Assists with employee relations including preparation and review of documents; compiling information for investigations and/or litigation; shadowing team in investigations; and preparing and maintaining reports, files and records.
  • Operates personal computers, printers, and other office equipment.
  • Assists with training and development including scheduling, coordination and support, preparing training announcements and materials; and tracking, recording, and documenting training.
  • Assists members of management, professional and technical staff by performing a variety of administrative, technical, and analytical projects and assignments.

Job Requirements:

  • Interested in pursuing a career in the field of Human Resources or Risk Management.
  • Current enrollment in upperdivision courses of a bachelor’s degree program inHuman Resources Management, Risk Management, Public or Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment are required.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Experience working with the public.
  • Previous work or internship experience witha local, county, or other government agency.
  • Equivalent to completion of two years of college with major course work inHuman Resources Management, Risk Management, Public or Business Administration, or a closely related field.
